President Hakainde Hichilema has promised to push ahead with major infrastructure and economic projects in Luangwa District if he is re-elected in the August 13 General Election.
Speaking during a campaign rally in Luangwa, President Hichilema said his government will begin discussions with the Zimbabwean government to construct the Kanyemba Bridge across the Zambezi River. He said the bridge will connect Luangwa District to Zimbabwe, improve regional trade and reduce pressure on the busy Chirundu Border.
The President also said his government plans to work with Mozambique to establish a fish market that will make it easier for traders to buy and sell fish imported from the neighbouring country.
On local infrastructure, President Hichilema pledged to rehabilitate the Kavalamanja Road to improve access between Kavalamanja Village and the D145 Main Road. He also directed that the district's pontoon be repaired and returned to service to improve transport for residents.
To support employment and economic growth, the President said the Chakwenga Gold Mine will be developed immediately after the elections if he is given another term in office, creating jobs for local people.
He further assured residents that construction of Luangwa District Hospital will be completed, improving access to healthcare services.
Addressing environmental challenges, President Hichilema said his government remains committed to finding a lasting solution to the human-wildlife conflict in the district, where elephants continue to destroy crops and property.
The President also acknowledged that poor rainfall remains a major challenge for farmers in Luangwa. He said government will continue supplying maize to help improve food security while also working to improve mobile network coverage to enhance communication and access to essential services.
