MTN Mobile Money Zambia Chief Executive Officer Komba Malukutila said the company has invested in its network, systems, agents and customer support to ensure farmers can access reliable and secure payment services.
Mr. Malukutila said the expected increase in agricultural activity provides an opportunity to promote financial inclusion and reduce dependence on cash payments in the agriculture sector.
“MTN Mobile Money recognises the important role agriculture plays in Zambia’s economy and the lives of millions of people. We are ready to support this year’s crop marketing season by providing secure and convenient digital payment solutions,” he said.
A key development this year is the partnership between MTN Mobile Money and the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), which will allow farmers to receive crop payments directly through MoMo.
Mr. Malukutila said the partnership will help farmers access their money faster without travelling long distances or carrying large amounts of cash.
He added that digital payments will also help FRA improve efficiency, transparency and accountability in the payment process.
Beyond FRA, MTN Mobile Money is also working with agro-commodity buyers and companies running out-grower schemes to enable them to make bulk payments to farmers across the country.
The company has also introduced a digital payment solution for cooperatives, allowing members to monitor transactions and improve accountability in the management of cooperative funds.
Mr. Malukutila said MTN Mobile Money is working with farmers, input suppliers, insurance companies and other agriculture stakeholders to support digital payments for wages, farming inputs, produce sales and insurance services.
He said the initiatives support Government’s digital transformation agenda by helping more Zambians access financial services.
“Financial inclusion is a key driver of economic growth, and agriculture is one of the important sectors where we can extend these benefits to millions of Zambians,” Mr. Malukutila said.
