President Hakainde Hichilema has presided over the two Zambian presidential inaugurations with the highest attendance of foreign sitting heads of state in recent history.
His first inauguration in August 2021 drew 10 foreign heads of state, including leaders from Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and South Africa.
Five years later, his second inauguration on September 1, 2026 attracted five foreign sitting heads of state, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The historical comparison shows a clear pattern.
Edgar Lungu’s second inauguration in September 2016 attracted four foreign heads of state from Botswana, Uganda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, while his first swearing-in in January 2015 was attended by only one - then Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
Former President Michael Sata’s September 2011 swearing-in had no foreign heads of state in attendance, with the ceremony held within hours of the election results being announced.

While Hichilema’s 2026 inauguration did not match the record 10 foreign heads of state who attended his first swearing-in, his two inaugurations remain the highest-attended presidential ceremonies in Zambia in terms of foreign sitting heads of state.
